Three workers were killed in south Delhi after breathing in toxic gases while cleaning a tank in a biogas plant on Thursday evening.
The police said the incident occurred in Rajokri area at 4.15pm, when the victims identified as Jagat Ram (35), Virendra (18), and Dadu (35) went to clean the septic tank of the biogas plant.
While some reports suggested that the plant is run by Delhi government, others said it was operated from Western Green Rajokri Farmhouse in Vasant Kunj area.
"The victims were not wearing any safety gear, and got down into the 10-foot-deep tank without taking any precautionary measures," said a police officer. "The victims inhaled the toxic gases and died. When they didn't come out for a long time, workers present at the site got suspicious. They called the police control room and the National Disaster Management Authority when there was no response from inside."
A rescue team arrived and pulled out the victims by 5.30pm. They were taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre where doctors declared them dead.
The police said Dadu was a gardener at a farmhouse while the other two were cleaners.
The police said a case of negligence has been registered and further investigations are on.
