Three people died and two others faced injuries after inhaling poisonous gas while trying to save a man who had fallen into a manhole. The incident took place outside Anand Vihar railway station around 9am on Saturday.
The injured include a Delhi Police constable.
The police said that a sweeper, who is yet to be identified, fell into the manhole when he was cleaning the ground.
“In an attempt to save him, three men, who were standing nearby, jumped into the manhole. A Quick Reaction Team (QRT) standing nearby also rushed to the spot,” said a senior police officer.
A Delhi Police personnel also faced injuries in the incident.
The police took out the four men from the manhole and rushed them to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where three of them were declared brought dead. The two of the dead who jumped to help have been identified as Dadda and Bhandari. The two injured, identified as Sonu and Delhi Police constable Ramesh, are still recuperating at the hospital.
“All the affected persons have died so the sequence of event is not clear yet. We have spoken to eyewitnesses, who are giving contradictory statements. A case of causing death due to negligence has been registered,” BS Gurjar, additional DCP (railways) said.
The police said Dadda was a hawker and no one has come forward to claim the body of the unidentified person who was the first to fall in the manhole. “He must be the employee of a civic body as he was the first one to enter for cleaning. But neither DJB nor MCD has claimed the body yet,” said a senior police officer.
