To promote sports activities and create awareness regarding the coming Olympic Games among residents, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has decided to hold live-screening of all events in its area.
Municipal sources said the corporation also plans to hold activities to encourage and support the Indian athletes.
The body will install giant screens and projectors to show live the Olympic events at its community centres, parks and recreational centres.
Olympics 2016 will held in Rio de Janeiro from August 5. India has sent its biggest Olympic contingent this year with 120 Indian athletes.
“The corporation is still trying to fix the final modalities to ensure the success of the awareness/support drive. We are planning to approach the Indian Olympic Association and former Olympians to help us in our campaign,” said an EDMC official.
The corporation plans to the live-stream all games in which Indian athletes are participating and set up kiosks and information booths where people would be able to get information related to the games.
Sources said the EDMC has formed a six-member committee to identify sites. The corporation is mulling installing screens at malls and shopping centres under it, asking them to screen the events in lieu of advertisement rights during this tenure.
“Given the fact that India has fielded its biggest contingent this time and keeping in mind the performance of Indian athletes in the recent past, we hope this time as well the team will do India proud. This will give us an opportunity to create awareness about sports and increase interest among the people,” said an official.
