A tractor laden with sand from the Yamuna crushed a biker in the Tigaon area of Faridabad district late on Friday night. The accident triggered massive protests in the area with irate villagers torching a police vehicle.
On Friday, 22-year-old Ajeet Kumar was going home late at night after attending the wedding of his friend's sister at Cheersi village, when the tractor ran him over.
When the news of the accident reached the villagers, they rushed to the spot along with Kumar's relatives and friends. The late arrival of the police also angered the villagers.
When the cops arrived, the irate mob allegedly manhandled some of them and torched a police vehicle. The villagers alleged that the tractor driver managed to flee from the spot because the police arrived late.
The body was sent to a nearby hospital for post-mortem. When it arrived in the village on Saturday after the post-mortem, the villagers staged a protest at the Keroli crossing in Tigaon.
The protest disrupted the flow of traffic for nearly three hours. The protesters were demanding that the tractor driver be arrested soon.
Senior police officers rushed to the spot and assured the villagers of swift action after which the protest was called off. "Efforts are on to nab the driver," ACP Dinesh Yadav said.
On June 11, 2012, a Haryana police driver died in a similar accident when a tractor laden with Yamuna sand mowed him down in the Palla area. The deputy commissioner of Faridabad had then constituted a special task force to check the sand mafia.
