Barely a week after an insurance agent hailing from Orissa was raped by an inebriated Delhi Traffic Police constable and his associate, aboard a moving vehicle in the heart of the capital, a 31-year-old Delhi Police constable was picked up from his northeast Delhi residence on the same charge.
The incident — which is the third of its kind in a week, was reported from Jyoti Nagar on Sunday.
“The complainant approached us last evening and we acted on her complaint immediately,” said Dharmendra Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP), New Delhi Range.
According to police, the 32-year-old victim, who resides in the Ashok Nagar area claimed that Constable Shahnawaz of Delhi Police’s 1st Battalion first physically assaulted her brutally before raping her at her home on Sunday evening.
Acting on the victim’s complaint, a party from the local police station nabbed the accused constable from his Jyoti Nagar residence on Monday morning.
“The victim and Shahnawaz have known each other for more than a year now,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.
“Her husband, who has been identified as Amar Singh (38) — is the alleged offender’s friend. Shahnawaz would visit Singh’s residence on a regular basis.” Constable Shahnawaz had joined Delhi Police in early 2000 and had been attached with the 1st Battalion since.
“The accused had taken leave from duty to go on a vacation on the very day of the incident,” said B S Bhola, Deputy Commissioner of Police (1st Battalion).
“He was suspended from the battalion immediately after being detained by the local police,” Bhola added.
Police said the accused claimed that the victim and he had been maintaining a consensual sexual relationship since their association.
Meanwhile, a case has been lodged at the local police station. “We have lodged a case and investigations into the matter are underway,” added JCP Kumar.
