You will soon find transport department's zonal offices — commonly known as transport authority — tout-free.
Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh said transport officials have been "directed" to weed out corruption from all its zonal offices. The minister also made a surprise inspection of a couple of zonal offices and took feedback from people who were queuing up for their driver’s licence and other works.
HT had earlier highlighted how corruption was rampant at transport department’s offices and most people relied on touts to get their work done.
According to senior transport officials, people take help from touts when they don’t have the necessary documents or the applicants do not want to stand in queues.
“Inter-linking all zonal offices through internet is our first step towards making our offices tout-free. We are improving the way we issue licences to applicants. In the second phase, we will streamline the system of issuing fresh vehicle registration certificates or make changes in them,” Singh said.
Delhi is the first in the country to have all its zonal offices inter-linked. Transport officials claim those who take prior appointment will be issued driver’s licence in 30 minutes flat.
“Those who are applying can also take help from the call centre to fill their forms. Our new system will leave no scope for touts,” Singh said.
To streamline its system and reduce queues at the counter, the transport department has also decided to accept e-payments towards application fee for the driver's licence.
