KASHMIR WILL soon have broad-gauge trains that will provide passengers a taste of comfort and elegant travel at no extra cost. The coaches fitted to these trains have an “array of features that makes them a class apart, said a senior Northern Railway official.
The coaches are designed by engineers in Chennai specially for the conditions in Kashmir.
The “local trains”, or Diesel Multiple Units in railway terminology, have automatic temperature control to heat up interiors and defrost exteriors. “The front of the engine also has a cattle-guard snow cutter,” he said.
Trials on the 120-km-long line between Qazigund and Baramulla in the Valley will begin soon.
