Till yesterday they were selling balloons at traffic signals. On Friday morning, they were cashing in on the anti-corruption blitzkreig.

A group of 70 vendors, including women, flocked to Ramlila Ground to sell Anna masks, badges, caps, flags and wristbands. Anna accessories have become the latest craze in the market. From college students to housewives, everybody wants to wear an Anna badge.

Wholesalers in Sadar Bazaar are supplying Anna merchandise across the Capital and against Corruption (IAC) has also set up a shop inside Ramlila Ground. “The response has been very good. Since morning, we have sold more than 500 Anna caps. Anna badges are also selling like hot cakes,” said Murari Ram, who came to Ramlila Maidan from Madanpur Khadar to sell Anna merchandise.

Anna masks are available for Rs 20, badges for Rs 10, T-shirts for Rs 120, caps for Rs 15 and small tricolours for Rs 10.

“Anna has become a larger-than-life figure. We saw his popularity soaring on TV and decided to manufacture special Anna badges, masks, T-shirts, caps and wristbands. We are not able to meet the demand as people are buying it in bulk,” said Dayal Bhai Jhandewala, a wholesaler in SadarBazaar.

T-shirts with Anna’s picture and IAC logo have become the first choice for college-goers. “We will wear these t-shirts to college. The 74-year-old has become a youth icon,” said Srishty Chawla, a Delhi University student.

Meanwhile, in wholesale markets, sale of Anna-shirts has surpassed sales of Che Guevara T-shirts. The IAC merchandise shop inside the protest venue has also got an overwhelming response from the supporters.

“Since morning, we have sold around 1,500 T-shirts with IAC logo. Sale of tri-colours and badges has been whopping,” said Abhay, supervising the IAC goodies counter.
