A new union of railways employees, sponsored by railway minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, is in the offing.
An outfit called Shramik Union was registered at one of the 16 zonal railways headquarters last month, while formalities for replicating the exercise are being initiated at other zones.
It is affiliated to the Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (INTTUC) — Trinamool’s union arm.
The All India Railwaymen Federation and the National Federation of Indian Railwaymen are the two recognised unions.
Pradeep Banerjee, INTTUC general secretary, said, “Other unions are slaves of the management. Shramik Union will carry forward Banerjee’s ideology — continuing to give voice to her struggles in support of the oppressed and weak.”
“Shramik Union is also a front set up by Trinamool to collect funds ahead of next year’s assembly election,” CPM leader Basudeb Acharia alleged. “Utter rubbish,” Trinamool leader Sultan Ahmed said.
