Three people have been arrested for allegedly raping and brutally murdering a girl who had eloped with their accomplice who is still at large.
The four people were related to the girl, a resident of Burari in Delhi.
Arvind Kumar, Vijayveer and Ram Avtar Yadav have been arrested by the north district police, while Vipin Kumar, the prime accused, is on the run. Vipin, with whom the girl had allegedly eloped on August 17, hatched the plot to kill her when, despite their requests, she refused to return to her parents.
Arvind, according to police, said that on August 20, they accompanied the girl to Bareilly. “They took her to Pachhua village and raped her. Later, they throttled her and banged her head against a tree to kill her. They threw her body into a canal, which was found on August 27,” deputy commissioner of police (north) Sindhu Pillai said.
Vipin had refused to marry the girl fearing social stigma. “However, the girl began pressurising him for marriage and refused to return home,” Pillai said. “They were staying in Arvind’s home. He told neighbours that the girl was a niece, and Vipin was her cousin,” he added.
Arvind and Vipin decided to kill the girl when they felt they were left with no option in the face of her demand for marriage.
Pillai said Arvind was the first to be arrested and his interrogation led to the arrest to the others accused.
“The girl’s family did not name any suspects. We found that several messages in the girl’s cell phone had been sent from Arvind’s number. He was held and questioned,” Pillai added.
