A two-year-old girl was crushed to death at the Commonwealth Games construction site in Jawaharlal Nehru stadium on Monday night, police said.
The victim, Varsha, was killed when she came under the rear wheels of a truck at the construction site.
The police said the girl was playing on the road inside the stadium when the truck hit her. The accused driver fled from the scene after the incident.
The girl's parents who are natives of Madhya Pradesh used to keep their daughter when they came for work.
A case of rash driving and death due to negligence has been registered at the Lodhi Colony police station.
"We have registered a case and are looking for the driver who has been identified," said a senior police officer. The police said NKG company was doing the road construction work at the stadium.
"We have asked the contractor to give us the details of the accused driver," said the officer.
The police said the victim was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where she was declared dead on arrival.
“The truck driver did not follow the safety norms and overlooked the children playing near the site," said the officer.
The police said they were also questioning the security supervisor of the stadium to know whether children were allowed on the construction site.
