The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police have arrested two people and seized five leopard skins from them. One accused hails from Himachal Pradesh while the other is from Haryana. They had come to the city to sell off the animal skins hoping to get a price of Rs. 80,000 to Rs. 1 lakh for each.
They revealed all the five leopards had been trapped and killed in the forests of Himachal Pradesh by their associate known only as ‘Bengali’.
Accused Moinuddin (50) a resident of Village Bhedo, Nahan, Himachal Pradesh, bought the skins from ‘Bengali’ who had trapped all the five animals in the forests of Himachal Pradesh and adjoining areas. The trap used to catch the animal was an iron clamp, which was planted along the tracts known to be frequented by the big cats. As soon as the unsuspecting animal stepped on the clamp it would shut down, trapping the animal’s leg in an extremely painful and irreversible grip.
The hunter came back on daybreak the next day. The animals were killed by sticks but care was taken so as not to damage their expensive skin.
The police said the flesh and bones of these animals are used by for manufacturing aphrodisiacs and all kinds of drugs said to cure impotency. The skins are sold to ‘connoisseurs’ who pay handsome amounts to hang them on their walls.
The other accused Ajay Sharma, runs a makeshift ayurvedic medicine shop. He worked as Moinuddin’s front man and helped him look for prospective buyers for the skins.
Police said Moinuddin disclosed he has been in the trade for the past two years. He has sold a few skins through Ajay Sharma in the past two years as well.
