The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two officials of the central finance ministry for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 1 lakh from a businessman in lieu of their promise to reduce his service tax dues.

The arrested accused, superintendent LN Meena and inspector Anuj Kumar, were working with the service tax wing of the department of revenue under the finance ministry, according to CBI spokesperson Dharini Mishra.

The accused officials were trapped while allegedly accepting the bribe from the businessman near their office located at Lodhi Road, said a CBI source.

The businessman, who runs a car rental service, had earlier alerted the CBI about the accused officials's demand for money after which they were put under surveillance.

“The complainant had alleged that the superintendent and the inspector of service tax department were demanding an illegal gratification of Rs.1 lakh for favourable settlement of his service tax liabilities. We registered a case and caught the officials,” said the source.

The agency undertook searches at the official and residential premises of the accused which allegedly yielded documents related to assets held by them or their relatives, said the source. “Incriminating documents were recovered during the searches that are being scrutinised,” said the source. The accused were remanded to two days of CBI custody by a city court on Saturday.
