Two friends, on their way back from a pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi in Jammu Kashmir, lost their lives after their Hyundai Accent car hit a pile of bricks in the early hours of Wednesday.
The accident took place in outer Delhi's Alipur area. Two people, who were sleeping on the road but at a distance, were injured when some bricks which flew in the air because of the accident hit them.
Police said Rishi, 28, a resident of Patparganj, and his friend Saurabh, 25, from Kanpur, were coming from Murthal side when Rishi, who was behind the wheel, lost control of the vehicle and hit the pile of bricks.
"Some eyewitnesses said the car was coming from Murthal at a very high speed. All of a sudden the driver lost control and the car hit a pile of bricks kept some metres away from the road. The impact of the accident was so powerful that the front portion of the car was badly damaged," said a senior police officer.
Police said the two occupants of the car were stuck inside the mangled car and they were brought out after cutting the vehicle with the help of a gas cutter.
The duo was then rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.
Police said Rishi was identified with the help of his driving licence.
