Two 12-year-old children, Javed and Aakash, drowned to death after accidentally falling into drains in two separate incidents in outer Delhi on Sunday, police said.
The incidents come a day after four children lost their lives in a similar manner after falling into an unattended water-laden ditch dug by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) in north Delhi’s Timarpur area.
According to police, the first incident occurred around noon at the Shahbad Dairy area when Javed was playing with his friends.
“He was playing with five of his friends when he fell into the adjacent canal,” said a senior police officer.
The second incident occurred around 12:40 pm in Sultanpuri’s S block, when the child -- who has been identified as Aakash, was playing with his friends.
“He had left his Mongolpuri residence to play with his friends around noon,” said a senior police officer.
“While playing, Aakash lost his balance and fell into the Najafgarh drain which is located behind the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital,” the officer said.
Police said Aakash’s corpse was fished out by fire department officials around 3 pm.
Seven children -- including Aakash and Javed have drowned to death in the past week.
Twelve-year-old Sunny, a resident of Chirag Delhi, was the first such casualty.
He had drowned in a ditch dug by the DJB while washing-off colours on the festival of holi on March 1.
“No cases have been registered since both were accidents,” added the officer.
