A 65-year-old man was assaulted and robbed at gunpoint by two bike-borne assailants in east Delhi’s Anand Vihar area on Wednesday afternoon, the police said.
"Nand Kishore, a resident of Laxmi Nagar, had de-boarded a bus in Anand Vihar, when the two men waylaid him. Kishore was returning after a visit to the bank in Preet Vihar," said a senior police officer.
The police said the two men were later caught and were identified as Deepak Sharma, 33, and Aakash Saini, 26 — both residents of Bareily in Uttar Pradesh.
The police said Sharma and Saini had seen Kishore, who deals in torn currency notes, withdraw money from the bank, and had followed him.
"As Kishore was walking towards the school (where his grandson studies), the assailants intercepted him at 1.45pm and told him to hand over the bag," the officer said.
According to the police, the two assailants were caught by passersby who heard Kishore’s cries for help.
"They abandoned their motorcyle and started to run when they saw the people. The mob was joined by two beat constables in casual clothes who nabbed the assailants just 200m from the spot," said the officer.
The police said the two can be linked to similar incidents that occurred in the area in the last fortnight.
The police have registered a case of snatching and are verifying the antecedents of the two accused.
