With elections round the corner, the government, it appears, is no mood to take any chances at least as far as law and order is concerned.
Keeping this in mind, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has asked Delhi Police Commissioner, Yudhvir Singh Dadwal to personally brief the media on a fortnightly basis.
The idea behind the move is to reach out to a maximum number of people and convey to them that the crime situation is improving, a senior home ministry official said.
As part of the exercise, Dadwal briefed media last week. “It makes a huge difference if the police commissioner himself reaches out to people through the media. These briefing would also directly impact investigation of cases, with the police making an extra effort to crack a case rather than tell their boss every two weeks there are no leads,” a home ministry official said.
