Mining is not sustainable, still, it has to be done to the extent we need minerals. But a Rs 16,000 crore loot and illegal stripping of the earth is pure theft from the public, the country and the planet. In this era of climate change, of mass environmental movements and rapidly deteriorating eco-systems, no political party can sit mum on such issues, more so when it’s own cadre is named. There is a case for engaging with data, but none for delayed safeguards within a time frame in the public interest. We all know this in India we are all still eating possibly contaminated vegetables despite several exposes.
