A 20-year-old woman was allegedly lured to southwest Delhi's Najafgarh on January 7 on the pretext of celebrating her mentally-challenged niece's birthday and raped consecutively for five days by her own uncle, police said on Tuesday.
"The accused has been identified as Sultan Singh, 40, an ex-CISF constable. He had lured his niece to his Gopal Nagar residence on the pretext of celebrating his nine-year-old daughter's birthday on January 7. He sexually assaulted her on the same night," said Sharad Aggarwal, deputy commissioner of police (southwest).
According to police, Singh, who is a property dealer by profession, was arrested from his residence on Tuesday after two days of being on the run.
"Singh, whose wife passed away four years ago, has two daughters aged nine and seven. On the fateful day, he called his niece over to celebrate his nine-year-old's birthday,” said a senior police officer.
“He used the fact that she is mentally challenged to his advantage. He told his niece that she would like it if her aunt came and stayed over," the police officer added.
Police said the victim is a resident of Farooqabad village, Gurgaon. "After they had dinner and his niece and daughters retired for the night, Singh went into the room and raped her. He took away her mobile phone after sexually assaulting her and kept her locked in the same room for the next five days," the officer said.
According to police, it was only after the victim's husband, anxious at the fact that his wife's phone was not reachable for the past five days, contacted Singh and demanded that he let her talk to him, that she was freed on January 17.
"The victim was mortified by the threats that Singh had made asking her to keep quiet about the sexual assault," the officer said. Police said the victim approached the local police station after relating the incident to her husband.
"We had been looking for Singh after the victim's medical examination confirmed rape. He was arrested on Tuesday evening," DCP Aggarwal added.
