The Cabinet Committee on Appointments has cleared the name of Uday Varma for the post of secretary, information and broadcasting ministry. “The order came on Friday. We assume the new secretary will assume office soon,” a ministry official confirmed on condition of anonymity.
Varma will take over from Jawhar Sircar, secretary, culture ministry, who was given additional charge as I&B secretary after Raghu Menon’s retirement on October 1.
Currently, Varma is secretary of ministry of micro, small and medium enterprises.
On the appointment of the chief executive officer for Prasar Bharati, the official said the new appointment is subject to the former incumbent BS Lalli’s fate.
Removal proceedings are currently going on against Lalli in Supreme Court for alleged acts of omissions and commissions in awarding of broadcasting rights contracts during the Commonwealth Games.
Sources say that the new Prasar Bharati CEO will be appointed only after amendments to the Prasar Bharai Act becomes an ordinance, subject to the President’s nod.
