Ex-Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje has been named the new chief of the state BJP and will spearhead the party’s 2013 assembly poll campaign. Raje’s name was formally announced by BJP president Rajnath Singh on Saturday.

“I accept the decision with humility. My endeavour will be to ensure a handsome victory for the party,” said Raje, as jubilant party workers burst firecrackers and distributed sweets.

After much tussle, senior leader Gulab Chand Kataria was named Raje’s successor for the leader of the opposition in the assembly.

The announcement of Raje’s name is being seen as the BJP’s acceptance that she is the tallest leader in the state and the likely frontrunner for the chief ministerial post.

Though the decision was taken some weeks back, the announcement was withheld as there was fierce infighting.

Several rounds of meetings were held over the last few days to reach a consensus over Raje, as well as for the post of leader of opposition.

On Saturday too meetings were held at the residences of Arun Jaitley and Singh after which a consensus was arrived at. Thereafter, Raje and Kataria put up a show of unity.

“The BJP is a family. We will all work together to strengthen the party and lead it to victory,” said Raje. On his part, Kataria said he would carry out the responsibility given to him by the party to the best of his ability and would work with Raje in the best interest of the party.

In the last four years the party remained a lacklustre opposition due to bitter infighting between the pro and anti-Raje camps.
