After CBI failed to file the chargesheet in the stipulated 60-day period; controversial businessman Abhishek Verma and his Romanian wife Anca Maria Neausu were on Wednesday given bail by a Delhi court in a corruption case. But the couple was re-arrested in a fresh case of forgery and sent to judicial custody for a day.

The CBI has booked the couple for allegedly writing a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on a forged letterhead of the then minister of state for home affairs Ajay Maken seeking easing of business visa norms in 2009.

The case was registered after Maken had lodged a complaint with the CBI.

“The CBI received a complaint from Ajay Maken on July 25 which claimed that from media reports he got to know about a letter purportedly written by him for obtaining visas for employees of a foreign company. The minister also stated that he checked his record and found no such letter was issued from his office. On the basis of the complaint, the CBI registered a case against Verma and his wife,” said a CBI spokesperson. She added the FIR mentioned as accused two firms suspected to be controlled by Verma and a Chinese telecommunications firm, Zte.

The agency arrested the couple in the court room minutes after Special CBI Judge Sanjeev Jain granted bail.

Arrested by the CBI on June 8, Verma and his wife have been accused of taking US $5,30,000 from Rheinmetall Air Defence for using his influence to stall blacklisting proceedings initiated by government against it after the Ordnance Factory Board scam had surfaced.

The CBI, which had booked them under the Prevention of Corruption Act and IPC in June, has now lodged a new FIR which also mentions certain charges under the Information Technology Act.
