After he brutally stabbed his 22-year-old fianceé, Omaid Hussain spent the night in a park nearby, sleeping on a bench. In the morning, he informed his family and they told him to take the first flight back to Kabul.
Hussain would have escaped had it not been for the alertness of 14-year-old Naghma (name changed), a friend of Khanjar's. She informed the police and even gave details about the accused to them.
Sources in the police said the murder was planned and the murder weapon — a kitchen knife — was purchased three days ago.
"On Saturday night, she told her aunt that she was going to the guesthouse. At 10:10pm, we went there. She (Khanjar) and Hussain asked me to come after an hour. They probably wanted to talk, so I left. At 11:10pm, I went back to the room. I saw her body covered in blood," said Naghma. She immediately informed her family members and called the police.
"The victim’s friend provided crucial details and even had his photographs in her mobile phone,” a senior police officer said.
"We had planned to go to Agra and Hussain had even booked a van for all of us. He was very happy about the trip and we were supposed to leave at 6am," Naghma added. She said the victim had a return ticket for March 7, while Hussain had also booked his ticket around the same time.
