The ill-treatment meted out to a 10-year-old girl student at a government school in southeast Delhi four days
ago has the proverbial good guys in a fix.
Despite their best efforts to persuade the victim’s parents to file a criminal case against their daughter’s tormentors, the former have requested the local police to hush up the matter, lest it invites social censure.
“The incident was reported from an MCD school located in the Ambedkar Nagar area on February 18. The victim, a Class 5 student, was flogged in class before being molested by her class teacher,” said a senior police officer requesting anonymity.
The victim, who was suffering from fever, invited her class teacher’s wrath for being five minutes late for morning class on the fateful day.
“When her teacher asked why she was late, she told him that she was unwell and was in the toilet. He scolded her first before mercilessly assaulting her in front of the entire class,” the officer. “As if that wasn’t punishment for her mistake, the teacher called one of the sweepers and asked him to lift the victim’s skirt, in front of everyone.”
The girl related the humiliation to her parents, resident of the Madangir area, who ran from pillar to post for three days instead of allowing the police to initiate criminal proceedings against the teacher.
“We reached the spot immediately after we were intimated, but the victim’s parents had changed their mind by then.
They kept telling us that they had already intimated the school authorities about the incident and would handle it on their own,” said the officer.
On their part, the school authorities acted swiftly and suspended the accused teacher, identified as Ravinder Singh.
But if there’s someone who isn’t too happy, it’s the southeast district police.
“I have talked to the victim’s father and assured him that we will do all we can to ensure that Singh, who should be booked for molestation and criminal intimidation, is dealt with under law,” said Virender Singh Chahal, additional commissioner of police (southeast).
“If not for anything else but to ensure Singh’s arrest and acts as a deterrent for him and prevents him from terrorising someone else. But they have decided not to lodge a complaint with us,” Chahal added.
