The eldest of her parents’ two children, Priya Jain, who was mowed down by a speeding DTC bus in the Preet Vihar area of east Delhi on Wednesday, had decided to support her family’s meagre income ever since her father fell ill and lost his job.

“She was a brilliant student and would give tuitions to neighbourhood kids following her mother, Mamta’s footsteps. Her younger brother, Ashish, too started giving tuitions later,” said RK Jain, Priya’s grandfather.

Even while pursuing graduation in commerce from DU, Priya was doing courses in French and Spanish. She had also taken up a job at one of her relative’s electronic showroom in Swasthya Vihar. She aimed, her grieving family said, to ensure that she utilised her time more effectively. She had planned to get herself enrolled in an MBA programme at IGNOU on Thursday.

“She got up, as usual, and rushed out of her house around 11am. She took a bus to Preet Vihar and was standing on the road when the accident took place,” said Deepak Jain, her father, who was inconsolable.

Though her family alleged laxity on the part of the local police, the latter said that official formalities and fixing culpability might have ended-up delaying the filing of a case. The errant bus driver, Govind Lal, has been arrested, police said.
