Out of the 160 officials in MCD’s building department, 64 are facing corruption charges, according to a new Vigilance department list.
Among the 64 are 31 assistant engineers, 26 junior engineers and seven executive engineers, some of who are even facing trial.
Some officials have been investigated at least four or five times earlier, too, while some others were even suspended.
To deal with the menace, the MCD has now decided to transfer the tainted officials to other departments and bring in ‘honest’ individuals from other departments here.
“The building department is a sensitive department as it deals with people on a day-to-day basis and requires clearing of building plans which is a tedious process. Hence it is required that that the department remains clean,” said Jagdish Mamgain, chairman of Works Committee of the MCD.
On December 10, the MCD had brought out a list of 30 engineers from the building department saying they will transfer them. However, as the vigilance probe continued, more employees were found to be involved in corruption. “The 30 engineers who were going to be transferred also said it was unjust that only they were being targeted. So we decided that anyone with a corruption charge shall be transferred,” Mamgain added.
When asked how the building department will function smoothly in the absence of adequate force, Mamgain said they will shift people from some other departments.
“There will be more people joining us,” he said. The MCD’s building department deals with checking building layouts, giving permission for construction and cracking down on illegal constructions.
The civic body had planned to remove the officials last year but could not go ahead with the plan as some of them were backed by politicians.
