Putting an end to speculation and internal squabbling, BJP on Thursday declared candidates, including Vijay Goel for New Delhi and former cricketer Chetan Chauhan from East Delhi, for the seven Lok Sabha seats of Delhi.
Overriding Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra, Goel got the BJP ticket from New Delhi. Actor-turned-politician Hema Malini, who was the favourite candidate for this seat as per an internal survey of the BJP, had opted out of the race and volunteered to campaign. Goel will face a tough contest from Ajay Maken, the likely Congress candidate from New Delhi.
Former cricketer Chetan Chauhan will bat for the BJP from the East Delhi constituency. Vijendra Gupta, MCD Standing Committee Chairman, will be the BJP candidate from Chandni Chowk. Sitting BJP MLA from Janakpuri and former Leader of the Opposition Jagdish Mukhi will be in the fray from West Delhi.
Parvesh Verma, son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma, was also in the race for the West Delhi seat. Senior BJP leaders said he is likely to be adjusted in some other post within the party.
B L Sharma "Prem" will contest from North East, Meera Kanwaria from North West (SC) and Ramesh Bidhuri from Delhi South.
