Just 10 days before the Delhi University Students’ Union polls, alleged supporters of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) threatened and attacked a few students in Kirori Mal College. Two students were severely injured in the scuffle.

A group of people supporting NSUI candidate Vishal Chaudhary allegedly walked into the college campus around 10pm on Monday and told Jaswinder Chauhan — an independent candidate from the same college — to pull out of the race.

After Chauhan and his supporters refused, the NSUI members allegedly attacked the group with iron rods — both on the campus as well as in the hostel.

Two students from the college — Priyam Aggarwal and Suryavanshi Mani —were rushed to Hindu Rao Hospital for medical aid.

“A few men wearing T-shirts bearing Vishal Chaudhary’s name from NSUI arrived on the college campus and told us not to file for nomination and withdraw from the polls. When we refused, they beat us up with iron rods,” said Suryavanshi Mani, who was injured in the scuffle.

College authorities took cognizance of the incident and said that security would be increased till the elections were over.

“We will boost security for the students both within the campus and in the hostel premises,” said SP Gupta, principal, Kirori Mal College.

DU’s election office, however, denied having received any information about the incident. The election office claimed that no action could be taken as per the electoral code of conduct unless the candidate’s name featured in the FIR.

“I was not aware of any such episode and neither it was brought to my notice. We cannot take any action against Chaudhary or cancel his candidature unless his name is mentioned in the FIR,” said Ashok Vohra, chief election officer, DUSU Polls 2013.

A case was registered at the Maurice Nagar police station.

“A case has been registered for causing hurt and three people —Pawan, Manjit and Akash — have been arrested for causing disruption,” said a senior police officer.
