Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh talks about the government's upcoming transport projects for West Delhi.
All new road and transport projects are now being planned in west Delhi. Reason behind this sudden shift in focus?
A substantial population of Delhi lives in the western part of the Capital. It is a mix of rural and urban population that travels to every corner of the city to work or study. With the increase of private vehicles, we felt that there's an urgent need to strengthen public transport in this part. Since most of the roads are congested, we need to provide new flyovers and roads. We have given new flyovers and Metro to west Delhi and it will continue to be our focus area for the next few years as well.
What is your government doing to improve public transport in W Delhi?
Two new Metro lines will cut through west Delhi in phase 3. It will connect all important residential and commercial hubs with south and Central Delhi. There are two clusters of buses that have been specially marked for west Delhi. The frequency of buses will improve a lot and soon people will leave their private vehicles behind and start travelling by buses. There will be new BRT corridors here. Soon, you will see a Mudrika service for west Delhi.
DDA is planning to develop massive housing projects in west Delhi. How do you plan to provide effective transport facility there?
Whenever the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) develops a housing project, we integrate transport system with that. There are plans afoot to develop Mass Rapid Transit System, connecting the upcoming housing projects with the rest of Delhi.
