A waiter at a restaurant in posh Chanakyapuri area was bashed up when he refused to take a customer’s order after closing hours on Wednesday, police said.

The incident took place at the Moti Mahal restaurant on Malcha Marg around 11:15 pm. Police said the accused, Navneet Kumar, (28) thrashed the waiter when he told Kumar food is not served after 11 pm.

“He kept asking the staff to serve him dinner though the restaurant was already closed for the day. He reportedly hit the waiter and also broke a window pane after which the police was called in,” said a senior police officer.

The restaurant owner filed a complaint against Kumar, who was booked for causing damage and hurt. He was released on bail later.

The waiter and some of his colleagues received minor injuries and were given first aid.

Naveen Sharma, the restaurant cashier, said, “Kumar was drunk and picked up a fight with our staff when they told him to leave. Police had to be called.” However, no alcohol was found during a medical examination.

Kumar, a Pitampura resident, came to the restaurant with his girlfriend.

“He came when the waiters had already begun cleaning the restaurant. He also argued with them that he was a regular patron and they should take his order. When he was asked to leave, he got agitated and picked up a fight,” said a senior police officer.

Kumar has, however, alleged the waiters at the restaurant had misbehaved with him and his girlfriend, but these allegations were turned out to be false, police said.
