Highlight Story

Ten construction workers were killed and seven injured when the sidewall of a water reservoir caved in at Manesar on Thursday night. It was constructed just five days ago.

Police said while five labourers died on the spot, the rest died on way to hospital. They were taking bath next to the tank around 9:30 pm when the accident took place.

The construction site is in an information technology park at the industrial model township, 20 kms from Gurgaon.

District Magistrate Deepti Uma Shankar has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the dead and free treatment for the injured.

She said if the families of the victims wanted to take the bodies to their respective states for funeral, the expenditure would be borne by the administration.

“The water reservoir was constructed in the workers’ hutment area five days ago to store water for the proposed IT park. It caved in when the workers were drawing water from it. The labour contractor constructed the reservoir. We have already paid a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh to each victim’s family. The rest would be paid as per provisions of labour laws,” said S.P. Dwevedi, project in-charge of Era Infra Engineering constructing the IT Park.

A case of death due to negligence has been registered against project manager Saleram Dev and the contractor of Era Infra Engineering Ltd. The workers were from Bihar and West Bengal.
