Under fire from MPs cutting across party lines, the government on Friday said it did not order the phone tapping of any MP and a detailed enquiry into how call detail records (CDR) of leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley were unauthorisedly obtained, will be completed soon.
"The government is not tapping the phone of any MP….I will also like to categorically state that we never asked for the interception of Jaitley's phone and at no point did we seek his call detail records (CDRs)," Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde informed the Rajya Sabha.
Faced with a volley of questions from members on how the government failed to detect the suspicious activity of a Delhi Police constable for almost a year and whose behalf he was acting, Shinde asked the members to wait for the outcome of the probe.
"Please do not insist on the time limit. We will complete it as soon as possible….Already four persons have been arrested," Shinde said.
Earlier, the Opposition mounted a strong attack on the government.
"Normally the suspicion goes to the government...How can such activity take place without government's consent?" BJP leader M Venakiah Naidu remarked.
CPM MPs said there were reports that the name of their party leader Sitaram Yechury was among those whose CDRs were obtained. SP's Ramgopal Yadav said there were reports that CDRs of around 100 MPs may have been obtained.
