Joint commissioner of police (traffic) Satyendra Kumar Garg has been strict on traffic violations. Excerpts from an interview:
Traffic violations by DTC buses have gone up in the past couple of years. How is Delhi traffic police dealing with these rogue vehicles?
Traffic violations and accidents by Delhi Transport Corporation buses have certainly gone up. The DTC officials claim that the number of buses has increased and that's why accidents have also increased. But we have stepped up prosecutions. This year, prosecutions have been more than twice those in 2010. We are trying to ensure that DTC buses operate as a responsible public transport system through regulation, training and enforcement of rules.
What are the traffic norms that DTC buses have been found violating?
We prosecute DTC buses for all kinds of violations, including dangerous driving, red light jumping, driving without wearing uniform or fastening seat belt and overtaking and tampering with speed governors, among others. The Supreme Court has imposed restrictions on heavy vehicles overtaking and picking up passengers from places other than bus stops. But DTC is often found violating them. We have even impounded DTC buses for such violations.
People have started calling DTC buses the new Bluelines. Comment.
I don't think it would be appropriate to call DTC buses killer buses or new Bluelines. But DTC should appoint efficient drivers and train them properly. Some people who were earlier driving Blueline buses may have got contractual appointment with DTC. They need to be disciplined and trained.
