banquet house fire

A wedding at a local banquet house turned into a tragedy on Sunday night after a 12-year-old girl’s death in celebratory firing by her cousin in west Delhi’s Mundka.

Police said the incident took place around 10.30pm at IP Motel banquet hall on Rohtak Road in Mundka. The deceased was identified as Shivi Gupta, from Modi Nagar in UP.

Police said she had come to attend the wedding with her cousin Shankar Gupta. Police said Shankar fired the bullet that claimed Shivi’s life. He is absconding.

V Renganathan, additional CP (west), said the girl and her cousin had come to Delhi to attend the wedding of their relative.

“The incident was kept under wraps for some hours because the victim and the accused were related to each other. Instead of informing the police about the incident, the family members took the injured girl to Modi Nagar where she died. We sent a team to Modi Nagar, took the body into custody and brought it to Delhi,” said Renganathan, adding a case of death due to negligence and under the Arms Act had been registered against Shankar.

According to a senior police officer, the incident occurred when the wedding procession reached the venue and Shankar started firing to celebrate.

“The bullet hit Shivi’s chest and she collapsed. In order to keep the matter under wraps, Shivi was taken to Modi Nagar instead of admitting her in a nearest hospital,” said the senior officer.

The licence of the revolver is issued in the name of Shankar’s uncle.

Shivi’s body has been preserved in the mortuary and efforts are on to nab Shankar and recover the weapon.
