Notorious car thief Manoj Bakarwala's wedding plans prompted him to increase his criminal activities after he escaped from Haryana Police custody in June 2011.

He wanted to make as much money as possible before tying the knot.

Sources said that days before he escaped, he got his former girlfriend’s husband killed. On an average, he was committing three crimes in a month, police said.

"Later, he fell in love with another girl, who is currently in Aligarh , and was planning to marry her next month. His involvement in crime has increased in the recent past due to this. He wanted to make good money before getting married," a source said. http://www.hindustantimes.com/images/HTPopups/210112/21-01-pg-05a.jpg

Bakarwala, who is currently in the custody of the special cell of Delhi Police, has confessed his involvement in 18 cases.

“He was involved in 18 cases of car jacking, robberies and attempt to murder, after his escape of which eight cases are registered in Delhi and 10 in nearby cities,” Arun Kampani, DCP (special cell) said.

Bakarwala used to target luxury vehicles. At the time of arrest, he was coming from Nainital.

“His movement was reported in Aligarh , Nainital, Rudrapur and Haldwani in the past few days. His girlfriend lives in Aligarh , where he generally takes shelter at an accomplice’s house,” the source added.

During interrogation, Bakarwala told police that he had travelled in a Volkswagen Vento car, which he had lifted from Saket in November.

After coming to Delhi in the car, he parked it somewhere near the border and then went on with his work. “After stealing a car, he used to give it to his associates, who disposed of the vehicle,” the source further said.

He avoided his old associates to avoid getting caught.

“We kept his accomplices under surveillance, but he hardly ever met them. But his contact with one of his associates in Aligarh helped us nab him,” he said.
