It turned out to be a good weekend for Delhiites as rainfall and strong winds brought relief to the parched city on Saturday.
These were the first showers in May this year.
Though the maximum temperature was a high 41.2 degrees Celsius, the showers in the evening cooled the Capital.
“Rainfall was experienced throughout Delhi with 1.8 mm recorded at Safdarjung and 6.0 mm recorded at Aaya Nagar,” said a met official. The humidity oscillated between 70 per cent and 31 per cent.
The temperature at 8 pm on Saturday was 29 degrees Celsius, much lower than what it has been in the past week. The minimum temperature for the last week was around 28 degrees.
“The weather became very pleasant towards the evening. It is a perfect night to be outdoors,” said Kritika Sharma, a college student, who was enjoying the weather at India Gate.
She was not alone in her sentiment.
“The long wait for rains has finally ended. I just hope the good weather stays for a few more days,” said Ishnita Keskar, 22, a college student.
“It is a relief to be able to walk outdoors comfortable. The weather has become very pleasant, thanks to the rain,” said Ketan Dogra, who was hanging out with friends at Saket.
“Our old age has made the heat more unbearable for us so the last month was very difficult. Today is such a respite,” said 85-year-old Nirmala Kumar, a resident of Malviya Nagar.
The met department attributed the drop in temperature to the Easterly winds and the Western Disturbance.
“The interaction between the two created a local condition favorable to rainfall,” said BP Yadav, director, Weather Forecast, Meteorological Department.
According to the weatherman, there are chances of rain and squalls on Sunday as well.
