Taking cognizance of a report in HT that doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) were leaving the premier hospital for private institutions due to professional dissatisfaction, the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has asked AIIMS administration to look into the matter.
Referring to the media report that said three high-ranking faculty members had resigned and several others were contemplating on quitting AIIMS out of frustration, CAT said, “If these reports are true, what shall happen to a prestigious medical institution of national importance? Would it remain so?”
The tribunal made the observation while pulling up the institute for giving service extension to a senior doctor and head of AIIMS's CTVS department Dr Sampath Kumar beyond the retirement age of 62 years “out of sheer favouritism” and for depriving the chance of a deserving candidate.
The tribunal said such blatant favouritism would bring about “complete demoralization in the entire rank and file”.
