The 27-year-old daughter of a former director in the Ministry of Social Welfare jumped to her death from her fifth-storey residence in west Delhi early on Friday morning, police said.
V Renganathan, additional commissioner of police (west) said the victim, identified as Sonali Nautiyal, had recently flown back home from a university in the US without completing her MBA course. She was seemingly depressed due to several reasons.
"She had not liked the course that she had been sent to pursue in the US and used to keep talking about how much she regretting wasting her parents' money. She was also depressed due to her father's health condition," additional CP Renganathan said.
Police said they were intimated about the incident after Sonali jumped from the terrace of her residence at the Brotherhood Apartments located in Vikaspuri's H block at 6.30am.
As per the statement her father Devendra Dutt Nautiyal (who was a director in the Hindi department of the Ministry of Social Welfare) gave investigators, Sonali had left the country for a university in West Carolina in early March 2010 only to return just three months later.
"She had decided to come back when she did not like the course which her parents had heavily invested in. Moreover, her father has recently undergone an angioplasty operation which had pushed-up the family's expenses manifold," said a senior police officer investigating the incident.
This, police said, was something that Sonali used to repeatedly express regret about and what could have finally pushed her over the edge. Meanwhile, a case has been registered and investigations are underway.
