Even as the whole city was celebrating Indian cricket team’s World Cup victory, a woman was being quietly smothered to death by her alcoholic husband.

Her only fault was that she wanted to save money from being wasted. Interestingly, the accused took advantage of the noise and fireworks during the World Cup final celebrations and stabbed her 20 times.

Parvesh Tyagi, 38, was angry with his wife Nisha, 35, as she took over the finances of the household after Tyagi started wasting money in drugs and alcohol. He allegedly murdered her at their Keshavpur residence in west Delhi on April 2. Tyagi was arrested from Chander Vihar on Monday.

“He is a school drop-out and fell in bad company of drunkards and drug-addicts. He belongs to a family, which has a flourishing transport business, and money was never a problem in his life. When his wife took control of the finances of the family, he developed a grudge against her. Now, he used to beg and quarrel for money,” said V Renganathan, additional commissioner of police (West). Tyagi used to allegedly threaten her that he will kill her and he even had attempted in the past to do so. “He chose the night of April 2 as after the World Cup final the locality was celebrating and there was a lot of noise. He stabbed his wife with a pick-axe,” added Renganathan.

Nisha was found dead by her children in her room on April 3. She had 20 stab injuries on her body.

“We reached the spot to find Nisha lying in her bedroom,” the official said. The accused told police that after the murder, he took four gold bracelets and a gold chain from her wife’s body.
