Nine years ago Sunita Singh (32), a beautician, thought of easing her father’s burden and married her colleague Naveen.
Singh's father Chandoo Lal (62) worked as a labourer in a shoe factory and had two more daughters.
But on Friday evening her practical decision of marrying him lost ground and she killed her husband of nine years.
The couple, who were working in the same beauty parlour in Pitampura, got married in 2000. But a few months ago Naveen stopped going to work and took to alcohol.
Police said he regularly beat up his wife and even forced her into prostitution.
On Friday evening things went bad when Naveen started abusing his wife after getting drunk at their Sector-16 house in Rohini.
“He started beating her up. Sunita then went to the kitchen and got hold of the rollerpin. In a fit of rage she attacked him with the rollerpin. She later got a kitchen knife and attacked him in the throat till he was dead,” said Atul Katiyar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer).
After killing her husband, Sunita reportedly changed into fresh clothes and went to her father's house nearby. She told her father that she had had a fight with her husband.
“Chandoo Lal assured her that he would go and meet the husband the next morning and sort the matter. The next morning when he asked Sunita to accompany him she broke down and told him that she had killed her husband. The father then decided to inform the police and walked to the police station,” said the officer.
Police said Sunita had already left her daughter Princy (6) at her parent's house, as she “did not want her to grow up in hostile conditions”.
Chandoo Lal told the police: “It was tough for me to inform the police. I did so as it could have invited more trouble for the family as well as Sunita. I thought I would take recourse to law.”
“Though the murder is not justified, my son-in-law used to force her into prostitution and beat her up. She did all this in a fit of rage.”
