Delhi police have arrested a 50-year-old woman and her 22-year-old son for the murder of her 24-year-old daughter in an alleged case of 'honour' killing. The victim's uncle, who is also an accused in the case, is absconding.
Police said Deepti Chikara, a teacher in an MCD school, lived in Kanjhawala area of outer Delhi with her family.
She was in love with a man from another caste and her family objected to the relationship. When she didn't follow their orders, the family got her married to someone of their choice, only to see the victim return to her house a month after the wedding.
Police said with the victim staying at her maternal house and still adamant on marrying the man she loved, her family feared backlash from society.
"Her family had been putting pressure on her to get married but she had rejected two proposals. Later, she told her mother about her affair with an engineer from a different caste. The family had protested and forcefully arranged her marriage in January this year," a senior police officer said.
Police said once the victim returned to her maternal house at Jonti village in Kanjhawla, neighbours reportedly taunted her family about having a married daughter at home. The victim also used to have heated arguments with her mother over the subject.
"Chikara was in constant touch with the man she loved and the family got to know about it. And in the third week of April, she went missing. But her family did not file any missing person complaint," the officer added.
The matter came to light when the woman’s boyfriend sent an email to a senior police officer in Delhi Police and a probe was conducted.
"We went to the woman's house and asked her family about her and why hadn't they filed a missing complaint," the officer added.
The initial suspects were the victim's mother Veermati and her brother Mohit Chitkara.
And during sustained interrogation, the mother-son duo broke down and confessed to killing Deepti on April 19.
They told the police that the boy's paternal uncle had helped them kill her. The family told the police that they then took her body to Roorkee in Uttarakhand and dumped it in a canal.
"Mohit confessed that he strangulated Deepti and then he took the body in an Alto car to Roorkee with his mother. We will take them to the spot to recover the body," the officer added.
