A 26-year-old woman who was reportedly upset over being harassed for dowry committed suicide by hanging herself at her northwest Delhi house on Friday night, the police said.
Her mother-in-law and two sisters-in-law were arrested on Saturday for allegedly demanding dowry and troubling her, which pressured her into committing suicide, said a police officer.
None of the victim’s husband’s family members were available for comments. As per norms, a magistrate was also probing the death.
Police said the deceased, Preeti Jain, had often complained to her parents about dowry harassment. Her family, based in Ashok Vihar I, said Preeti’s husband’s family often made dowry demands.
“Preeti’s husband Pankaj, mother-in-law Shakuntala, sisters-in-law Meenu and Savita have been arrested and sent to 14 days’ judicial custody,” said an officer.
In another suicide case, an 18-year-old student allegedly killed herself due to exam stress in Dabri area of southwest Delhi. Police said that the deceased, Sonia Singh, was a student of JBT, a course that trains future teachers.
Police said Sonia took the step by hanging herself at her house at 12 p.m. on Saturday. Her father was away at Baghpat and her mother had gone to a pharmacy.
“She left behind a note saying that she had not fared well in her exams and was worried about her results,” said an officer.
