A 26-year-old lecturer of a renowned west Delhi college has alleged that her father-in-law tried to rape her at their Outer Delhi residence on Sunday night.

Police said the father-in-law has been identified as Ranbir Kumar (58), the principal of a local MCD school. The family lives in Kanjhawala area's Karala Village.

Police said the incident occurred between 10 pm and 10:30 pm on Sunday when Kumar allegedly barged into his daughter-in-law's first-floor residence.

A senior police officer said, "The woman claimed that soon after she stepped out of the bathroom, her father-in-law forced himself upon her. She somehow managed to free herself and locked herself inside the bathroom."

Police said Kumar lives with his wife on the ground floor house while his daughter-in-law lives of the first floor.

"The complainant married Kumar's son in early 2008. But his son soon moved out of the house as the marriage had been fixed against his will. His wife had been living alone since," the officer added.

Police said the woman called the police for help from the cell phone she had with her in the bathroom, where she hid till the police came to the spot.

"We reached immediately and helped the woman. We caught hold of the man and took him to the Kanjhawala Police Station and questioned him. At first the father-in-law denied the accusation and tried to pin the blame on the woman but later broke down and confessed to his crime," the
officer said.

Police said Kumar was placed under arrest immediately and a case was registered.

"We have registered a case against him and he is under police custody. The woman's family has also been intimated about the incident," the officer added.
