A 57-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her tenant at Geeta Colony in East Delhi on Tuesday night just because she had asked him to pay up an electricity bill of Rs 2,500.
The incident took place around 9.45 pm, when a discussion over the payment of bills between the landlady Devi Rani, her husband Vijay Kumar Malhotra and son Vijay, and the tenant Indrajeet Singh turned into a fistfight, the police said.
They said six people, including the tenant and his son Rinku, allegedly assaulted Devi. "Malhotra and Devi asked Singh to pay a pending electricity bill. Singh reportedly started arguing and called his son Rinku and other relatives. Soon they got into a fistfight. When Devi tried to intervene, Singh and his relatives assaulted her and she collapsed," said a senior
police officer.
Devi was rushed to Life Line Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.
The two families were having problems as Singh had not paid the rent for the last four months. The Malhotras wanted Singh and his family to vacate the house by March 10.
“They fought whenever we asked for the rent. Last night, we asked them to either clear the bills or vacate the house.
Indrajeet refused, saying he had no money. He said he was not going to leave the house. They thrashed me and my mother," said Vijay, who works in Tata Motors as a collection agent.
The police arrested Indrajeet and his son Rinku and filed a case of culpable homicide. They are searching for Amarjeet and Sunny.
