A 63-year-old woman, Savitri Devi, was stabbed to death by three men in her Sector 22 home in Gurgaon on Sunday, while her family was away. The main accused, who repeatedly struck her was her nephew, police said.

Though people in the neighborhood overpowered the fleeing men and handed them over to police, police initially thought it was a case of petty robbery.

That the woman was murdered was detected by neighbours only two hours following the arrest. Neighbors spotted a blood-stained dagger near the house, and informed the police.

The deceased’s relative Rakesh Kumar alias Bunty told police he had planned to rob and murder Savitri Devi to settle a gambling debt. His accomplices in the murder were Sanu Singh and Shyam, said police.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (West) Rajesh Duggal said the accused gained easy access into house no. 882 as Rakesh Kumar was related to the family. “It was 12:30 p.m. Rakesh switched on the television at a high volume in the drawing room as Savitri Devi went to the kitchen to prepare tea,” said Duggal. “The three followed her in the kitchen and overpowered her. Sonu Kumar and Shyam caught hold of her while Rakesh Kumar stabbed her 5-6 times in her stomach. She died on the spot.”

“After robbing the house, they scaled the backyard wall in their escape bid,” said the ACP. “It was at this time a washerman noticed them and raised an alarm and attracted the attention of some women who overpowered the accused.”
