A 65-year-old widow was bound, gagged and strangled by unidentified assailants at her residence in north Delhi's Haus Qazi area on Tuesday night, police said.

"The victim has been identified as Shauqat Begum who stayed alone at her ancestral haveli in Lal Kuan's Chabukwaali Gali. The incident was discovered when her maid came the next morning and found the woman's limbs bound with cloth and her mouth gagged with a rag," said a senior police officer from the investigation team.

Police said Shauqat Begum was unmarried and used to run a primary school from her haveli before she decided to shut it down seven years ago.

"Prima facie investigation has revealed that the victim had been targeted in a similar manner during a robbery at her residence in 2009. She had been bound and gagged as the assailants ransacked her residence then," the officer said.

Police said the victim had a property dispute with her niece and they were investigating whether she is involved in the incident.

"She is embroiled in a property dispute relating to the ancestral haveli where she used to stay with her niece. The matter is in court and we are currently in the process of verifying the said relative's whereabouts," said the officer.

Police said the house had been ransacked but they were yet to ascertain the total value of cash and jewellery missing from her residence. Her body has been sent to Maulana Azad Medical College for post mortem examination.
