Forty Two-year-old Niti Sarin and her paramour Gulfam Ahmed were leading a carefree life, perhaps giving little thought to the horrific murder of Sarin’s father Surjit Singh Marwah in 2006.
But the law caught up with them and the crime branch of Delhi Police arrested Sarin, Ahmed and three more on Thursday.
An alumnus of Modern School, Vasant Vihar, Sarin is accused of killing her father, 74-year-old Marwah, with the help of the other four accused.
The three-year-old murder case was solved with the help of an informer who apprised the police about a missing person’s case lodged three years ago.
A retired CPWD officer, Marwah went missing three years ago. His daughter Sarin had then lodged a complaint with the police.
A senior police officer said, “The informer told us that about three years ago Sarin conspired with Ahmed and abducted her father to usurp his property at Kailash Hills, East of Kailash. The records of Lajpat Nagar police station were verified and we found that a missing report was lodged at Garhi on May 18, 2006.”
Following these leads, the police interrogated Sarin and Ahmed. Police said Sarin got to know Ahmed after she got separated from her husband in 2004.
She married Sunil Sharma in 1985. She told the police that since her husband did not have a regular job, she opened a boutique in Lajpat Nagar in 1989. But after the birth of a son in 2002, she separated from him as he was a heavy drinker.
She told the police that on 11 May 2004, Sharma left for Vaishno Devi shrine and never came back. His father lodged a missing report at Kalkaji Police Station.
The police officer said, “After she separated from Sharma, she met Gulfam. She pretended to be a rich woman who could spend money on her boyfriend. Gulfam began to ask for more money from her on one pretext or the other. Soon she was under heavy debt. With no money to repay the debt, she told Gulfam about her financial condition. He then hatched a plan to kill her father.”
As part of the plan, Ahmed roped in his cousin Arif to execute the job. The cousin demanded Rs 5 lakh for it.
The police said on May 16, 2006, Arif along with his two associates — Ran Singh and Rohtash — came to Delhi and entered Marwah’s house with the help Sarin and Ahmed.
Police said they smothered Marwah with a pillow and Sarin provided them a white bed sheet to cover the body. The accused then took the body to Sardana in UP in a Ford Ikon car that Ahmed had borrowed from his friend Ravi Goyal.
Police said after killing her father, Sarin and Ahmed contacted a builder named Judge Chawla for rebuilding the property. He reportedly advised them to forge a gift deed in the name of Sarin from her father. Thereafter, they prepared the forged papers relating to property No. 204, Kailash Hills, East of Kailash, Delhi, and sold it to Chawla. The police have begun a search for Chawla, who is absconding.
