The body of a 53-year-old woman who was allegedly strangled to death was found at her flat in Dwarka on Monday. The woman’s son, who is untraceable, is the prime suspect, said police.
Identified as Meeta Jha, the woman lived in an apartment at Chandra Park in Dwarka’s Sector-3 with her 28-year-old son. Her husband died a few years ago and her daughter is a doctor in London.
The murder came to light on Monday when her daughter alerted neighbours when her calls went unanswered over three days. When neighbours told her that the flat was locked from outside, the police were informed.
The door was broken and Meeta Jha was lying dead in her bedroom. Doctors told the police that the woman was possibly killed by strangulation.
Police registered a murder case and checked CCTV footage. “The footage showed the woman’s son leaving the building on February 24. Since the body had begun to decay, it appears her son killed her, locked the house from outside and left. He is untraceable,” said a senior police officer.
“The son is a drug addict and is unemployed. He is notorious in the locality for his short temper and picking up fights,” said the officer.
Surendra Kumar, DCP (South-West), said the victim’s daughter also suspected her brother. “As soon as she came to know about her mother’s death, she told us that her brother is a drug addict and suspected his role in the murder,” said the officer.
A murder case has been registered at Dwarka (North) police station and a team has been formed to nab the suspect.
