As Haroon Yusuf walked into Basti Harphool Singh in Sadar Bazar area, he was welcomed with flower petals. People lined up the balconies and windows to see him. Others jostled with each other to hug him or shake hands with him.
Already done a hat-trick from the Ballimaran assembly seat, Haroon Yusuf looks to take forward his winning streak. "For the past 15 years, I have been working selflessly for my constituency. I make it a point to meet each and every individual who comes to my house. People love me across the communities and it reflects in the kind of reception I get from them," said Yusuf.
Athough Yusuf has won all the three elections from this constituency, BJP candidate Moti Lal Sodi said he was confident of turning the tables on the sitting MLA. "We won on three of the four corporation seats in the MCD elections last year and we are going to repeat our performance. Yusuf has done no work in the past 15 years. Water supply is abysmal and sewers are choked," said Sodi.
Though Yusuf is confident, the voters have mixed reactions on his performance. "Haroon bhai has improved public transport in Delhi by introducing red and green DTC buses," said Mohammad Roshan, a resident of Kasabpura.
"He has really worked for his constituency. Water supply ahs improved and lanes and by-lanes have also been repaired. He deserves to win again," said Rajnish Kumar, a resident of Basti Harphool Singh.
But some are disappointed with the Congress and its MLA for not being able to resolve the problems related to the slaughterhouse. "The abattoir has moved to Ghazipur. Many people in the area lost their livelihood. Many who did menial jobs here can't afford to travel to the outskirts of the city. And Yusuf did nothing to help," said Mohammad Naved Qureshi, a resident of Quresh Nagar.
Others complained of lack of civic amenities in the Walled City. "Sewers overflow all the time. Water supply is abysmal. What will we do with AC buses if we have to live in such hell," said Nadeem Khan, a resident of Nabi Qarim.
Yusuf agreed there were issues that needed to be taken care of. "Traffic congestion in walled city, re-modeling of schools, preservation of heritage buildings and improvement of healthcare services are on my agenda. I am advocating for a separate board for walled city so that we could have funds available for development of this part of the city," he said.
