A young man bludgeoned his “drunkard” and “eccentric” father to death with repeated blows from a hammer, HT reports.

A young man bludgeoned his “drunkard” and “eccentric” father to death with repeated blows from a hammer he wrested from his father at their east Delhi home late on Monday. The son told the police that his father wasn’t allowing him to pursue higher studies and take up a salaried job.

Bhushan Lal Dua (50), who operated a smalltime electrical switch-manufacturing unit from his Geeta Colony home, was of a destructive mind, his 20-year-old son Vipin has reportedly told police. Vipin snatched the hammer from his father, who initially tried to hit him in a fit of rage, police said.

Besides doing the switch business, Dua doubled up as a tantrik and offered ‘consultation’ to people, said an officer. “He was eccentric and would behave wildly with his family. He would beat up his wife, son and daughter. He would often not give them food if they didn't act according to his wishes,”said an officer.

The father also didn't get along well with almost everyone in his family, said an officer, and was not on talking terms even with his brother, a next-door neighbour, and his in-laws. Dua’s insistence to put Vipin in the manufacturing business was perhaps the immediate trigger for the murder. Vipin passed Class XII with 66 per cent and wanted to study further and take up a regular salaried job, said an officer.

“Dua had different view on this. He forced his son to work in the family business and do daily labour sitting in a small room in their house in Geeta Colony that doubled up as the manufacturing unit,” said an officer.

The father and son often argued with each other but Monday was different from the routine banter. Following an argument inside the manufacturing unit around 11 p.m., Lal cursed and thrashed Vipin, who in return warned his father to stop slapping him, said an officer.

“The father picked up a hammer and tried to attack Vipin, who wrested the weapon and struck him back. At least five hammer marks were clearly visible on the father’s head,” said an officer.

Neighbours said they made a PCR call after hearing screams from the house.

“We don't know much. We heard some shouts and called the police. They took over after that,” said Kamal Mehto, a resident.

Vipin had initially told the police that his father committed suicide out of depression but later confessed to killing him.
